'The Master' was one of the best films I've seen in years—and maybe Anderson's most ambitious film to date. I dedicate a toast to every person who left tonight before the credits—and to the ones who practically sprinted to the exit at end title. Balk or call it some sort of cinematic “self-defeat” if you must, but all I witnessed tonight was proof that American filmmaking hasn't grown dull or passive; it can still be anything but an easy wrestle.
